Understanding how flowers are structured helps you see how plants use water efficiently. Caesalpinia and Crotalaria are two common legume flowers found across Nigeria that show interesting adaptations. Both plants have flowers with similar basic structures including sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels, but they differ in how their petals are arranged and how they attract pollinators.
Caesalpinia flowers typically show irregular petal arrangement with one larger petal, while Crotalaria's flowers display the typical butterfly-like shape of legumes. These structural differences relate to how water moves through the flower tissues and how the plant conserves water in hot Nigerian climates. The waxy cuticles on their leaves and the position of their flowers help reduce water loss during photosynthesis and pollination.
