Animal hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands that travel through the blood to control body functions. Unlike nerves that work quickly, hormones work slowly but have lasting effects. The skin plays a crucial role in maintaining body temperature through hormonal coordination. When your body temperature rises, sweat glands in your skin receive signals to produce sweat, which cools you down as it evaporates. This is similar to how a Nigerian student feels cooler after taking a cold bath on a hot afternoon in Lagos. Conversely, when body temperature drops, hormones cause blood vessels in the skin to constrict, reducing heat loss. This hormonal system works continuously to keep your body at the ideal 37°C. Hormones like adrenaline also prepare your skin's sweat glands during stressful situations. Understanding this coordination between hormones and skin helps you appreciate how your body maintains homeostasis.

Plant hormones are chemical messengers that control how plants grow and respond to their environment. Unlike animals, plants don't have nerves, so they use these hormones to coordinate their activities. The main plant hormones include auxins, which make plants grow towards light; gibberellins, which control seed germination and stem elongation; and ethylene, which ripens fruits.
A perfect Nigerian example is how cassava plants respond to drought. When water becomes scarce, abscisic acid hormone builds up in the leaves, causing them to close their stomata to reduce water loss. This is why cassava survives better than many crops during dry seasons in northern Nigeria.
Another hormone, cytokinin, delays leaf aging and promotes cell division, while ethylene is why your bananas ripen faster when stored together. These hormones work together in coordinating plant responses to light, gravity, water, and temperature.
