Biological associations describe how different living organisms interact and live together in their environment. Think of it as a neighborhood where different species are neighbors, and they relate to each other in various ways. These relationships can be beneficial, harmful, or neutral depending on what each organism gains or loses.
In Nigeria, a common example is the relationship between crocodiles and plovers. The plover bird lands on the crocodile's teeth and eats parasites and food scraps stuck there. The crocodile benefits from cleaning, while the plover gets food. This partnership helps both animals survive.
Other types include competition, where organisms fight for the same resources, and parasitism, where one organism harms another. Understanding these associations helps us see how ecosystems stay balanced.
Adaptation means the special features and behaviors that help living things survive in their homes. These features develop over many years as organisms get used to their surroundings. When animals and plants adapt well, they stay alive better than others that don't fit their environment.
There are three main types: structural adaptations are body features like a crocodile's thick skin for water living, behavioral adaptations are actions like birds migrating south, and physiological adaptations are internal changes like a desert plant storing water. Think about Nigerian savanna animals—giraffes have long necks to reach high tree leaves where competitors cannot reach. This structural feature helps them survive where food is scarce on the ground.
These adaptations show us how nature creates perfect matches between organisms and where they live. Without adaptation, animals and plants simply cannot survive in their environments.
Atmospheric pollution happens when harmful substances get released into the air we breathe, making it unsafe for living things. These pollutants include gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, plus tiny particles of dust and smoke. When factories, vehicles, and power plants burn fuel, they release these dangerous materials into our atmosphere.
A clear Nigerian example is the air pollution in Lagos from traffic congestion and industrial activities. The heavy smoke from countless vehicles stuck in traffic, combined with emissions from factories in areas like Lekki and Apapa, creates a visible haze that affects residents' health. This pollution causes respiratory diseases, reduces visibility, and damages the ozone layer that protects us from harmful sun rays.
Atmospheric pollution also causes acid rain and global warming, which disrupt weather patterns and harm agriculture across Nigeria.

Ecological management means taking care of our environment to keep it healthy and balanced. Think of it like maintaining your home—you clean, fix problems, and prevent damage. In ecology, we manage natural resources like forests, water, and wildlife to ensure they last for future generations.
Sources of ecological problems include pollution from factories and cars, deforestation for farming, and overhunting of animals. These activities damage ecosystems and harm biodiversity. For example, the degradation of Nigeria's Niger Delta wetlands from oil drilling has destroyed fish habitats and affected local communities' livelihoods.
The effects of poor ecological management are serious: species extinction, soil erosion, water pollution, and climate change. When we manage ecosystems well—like creating national parks such as Yankari Game Reserve—we protect wildlife while allowing people to benefit from tourism and sustainable use of resources.
Pollution from noise, nitrogen compounds, smoke, smog, dust and particles seriously damages our environment and health. Noise pollution from busy Lagos roads and construction sites disrupts wildlife communication and causes hearing damage in humans. Nitrogen oxides from vehicle exhaust contribute to acid rain, which harms soil and water bodies. Smoke and smog—like what blankets Lagos during harmattan season combined with industrial emissions—reduce visibility and cause respiratory diseases. Dust and suspended particles from cement factories in Ibese, Ogun State, settle on plants, blocking photosynthesis and reducing crop yields. These pollutants also damage the ozone layer and contribute to climate change. Managing these requires stricter emission controls, regular vehicle maintenance, and enforcing environmental regulations.
Water and soil pollution happens when harmful substances contaminate our environment, making it unsafe for living things. Water pollution occurs when industries, farms, and homes release waste into rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Soil pollution happens when chemicals, heavy metals, or refuse mix into the earth, destroying its ability to support plant growth.
In Nigeria, the Niger Delta region suffers severe water pollution from oil spills and industrial waste, affecting farming and drinking water supplies. Soil pollution also damages agricultural productivity across many Nigerian communities. Both types of pollution threaten human health through contaminated food and water, kill aquatic life, and reduce crop yields.
Prevention requires proper waste management, treating industrial effluent before release, and responsible agricultural practices like reducing pesticide use. Cleanup involves filtering water, removing contaminated soil layers, and planting vegetation to restore polluted areas.
