The natural world contains two main types of objects: living and non-living things. Living things are organisms that have life. They grow, reproduce, eat food, breathe, move, and respond to their environment. Examples include humans, animals like lions and fish, plants like cassava and palm trees, and even tiny creatures you cannot see called microorganisms. Non-living things do not have life. They do not grow naturally, cannot reproduce on their own, and do not need food or air. Examples include rocks, water, soil, metals, and plastics. A chair is non-living because it cannot grow or reproduce, but the tree it was made from is living. When something dies, like when a chicken is slaughtered, it becomes non-living because it stops performing life activities.

Kingdom Monera contains organisms without a membrane-bound nucleus, called prokaryotes. These are the simplest and oldest living things on Earth. Bacteria and cyanobacteria belong here. They are single-celled, meaning one cell does everything the organism needs to survive. You'll find them everywhere—in soil, water, and even inside your body. Some bacteria in your stomach help digest food, while others cause diseases like typhoid fever, which is common in Nigeria during rainy seasons. Monera reproduce through binary fission, a simple splitting process where one cell divides into two identical cells. They're incredibly important because they break down dead material, recycle nutrients, and help farmers through nitrogen fixation in soil. Despite their tiny size, prokaryotes are tough survivors that can live in extreme conditions.

Plants and animals are both living things, but they differ in important ways. Plants make their own food using sunlight through photosynthesis, while animals must eat other organisms to survive. Think of a mango tree in your compound—it produces its own food from sunlight and water, but your chicken must eat seeds and insects to live.
Plants are rooted to one spot and cannot move around, whereas most animals can move freely to find food and escape danger. Another key difference is that plants have cell walls made of cellulose that give them rigid structure, but animal cells only have cell membranes that are flexible. Additionally, plants store food as starch, while animals store it as glycogen. Plants also grow throughout their lives, but animals reach a maximum size.
Understanding these differences helps you identify whether an organism belongs to the plant or animal kingdom when studying classification.
