Fish stock management refers to the careful control and monitoring of fish populations in water bodies to ensure they don't run out. This involves regulating how many fish are caught and when fishing happens, so that fish can reproduce and maintain healthy numbers for the future.
Nigeria's Lagos Lagoon is a perfect example. The lagoon historically had abundant fish, but overfishing threatened to exhaust the stock. Management strategies like setting catch limits and restricting fishing seasons during breeding periods help maintain the fish population while still allowing fishermen to earn a living.
Effective management uses scientific data to determine the maximum sustainable yield – the largest amount of fish that can be caught without harming future supplies. Without proper management, fish stocks collapse, fishermen lose income, and food security suffers.

Fish farming, also called aquaculture, means raising fish in controlled environments like ponds or tanks instead of catching them from rivers and oceans. This method helps meet Nigeria's growing demand for fish while protecting wild fish populations from overfishing. In fish farming, farmers control water quality, temperature, feeding, and breeding to produce healthy fish efficiently.
A common Nigerian example is catfish farming in ponds across southern states like Lagos and Ogun. Farmers stock fingerlings (young fish) in prepared ponds, feed them regularly with quality pellets, and monitor water conditions. This ensures faster growth and higher yields compared to wild fishing.
Fish farming reduces pressure on natural water bodies and provides employment for many Nigerians. It's also more sustainable for our environment since we're not depleting wild fish stocks unnecessarily.
