Termites are insects that live together in large colonies, sometimes numbering millions. They've developed amazing behavioural adaptations to survive and thrive as a group. Each termite has a specific job—some are workers, some are soldiers, and one pair are the king and queen. The workers build and maintain the mound while soldiers defend it from enemies like driver ants. A remarkable adaptation is their use of chemical signals called pheromones to communicate. When a termite discovers food, it leaves a chemical trail that guides other termites to the same spot. You've probably seen termite mounds in Nigerian compounds; these impressive structures show how termites cooperate through inherited behaviours. They also work together to maintain temperature and humidity inside the mound, which keeps the colony alive during dry seasons. This division of labour and cooperation is pure behavioural adaptation.
Bees are insects that live together in large groups called colonies, and they've developed amazing behaviours that help them survive. The most famous bee behaviour is the waggle dance, where a forager bee returns to the hive and performs special movements to tell other bees exactly where flowers are located. This dance uses angles and vibrations to communicate distance and direction—imagine giving directions using only body movements!
Inside a bee colony, there's a strict organization with a queen bee, male drones, and female worker bees, each with different jobs. Workers care for young bees, build honeycomb, and gather nectar, while the queen only reproduces. This division of labour makes the colony super efficient. In Nigeria, local beekeeping communities observe these remarkable social structures when maintaining apiaries for honey production.
