Adaptive colouration refers to the colours and patterns an organism develops to survive and succeed in its environment. These colours help animals in three main ways: obtaining food, escaping enemies, and attracting mates. For example, the chameleon, found in Nigerian forests, changes colour to blend with trees and leaves, making it invisible to both prey and predators. This camouflage helps it catch insects without being noticed. Some animals use bright warning colours to scare away predators—like the colourful poison dart frog. Males often display brighter colours than females to attract mates during breeding season. Certain animals also regulate body temperature through colour; darker colours absorb more heat in cold environments, while lighter colours reflect heat in hot climates.
