The braking system stops your vehicle by converting motion energy into heat through friction. Think of it like this: when you press the brake pedal in a Danfo bus in Lagos traffic, hydraulic fluid pushes brake pads or shoes against rotating discs or drums, creating friction that slows the wheels. Disc brakes, found on front wheels of modern cars, cool faster and work better in wet conditions. Drum brakes, common on rear wheels, last longer and cost less to maintain. Brake linings are made from asbestos-free materials bonded to metal backings. Servo-assisted brakes use engine vacuum to multiply your foot pressure, making braking easier and safer. Without servo assistance, you'd need much more leg strength to stop a heavy vehicle quickly. Drum brakes are cheaper but prone to fade; disc brakes perform better but cost more.
Brake faults occur when any part of your vehicle's braking system fails to work properly, making it difficult or impossible to stop your car safely. Common brake faults include worn brake pads, brake fluid leaks, damaged brake discs, and faulty brake cylinders. When brake pads wear thin, your car takes longer to stop because there's less friction material. Brake fluid leaks mean your brake pedal becomes spongy and soft, requiring more pressure to stop. Many Nigerian drivers ignore brake warning lights on their dashboards until it's too late. A commercial driver in Lagos who neglected his brake warning lights nearly caused an accident on the expressway because his brake fluid was leaking. Detecting brake faults early through regular inspection prevents dangerous situations and costly repairs.
