A weed is simply any plant growing where it is not wanted. Think of it as an uninvited guest in your farm or garden. Weeds compete with your crops for space, water, nutrients, and sunlight, which reduces your harvest. They can be annual plants that complete their life cycle in one season, or perennial plants that keep coming back year after year.
Common examples in Nigeria include *Imperata cylindrica*, known locally as spear grass, which spreads rapidly across farmlands and is difficult to control. Another example is *Chromolaena odorata*, the siam weed, which has become a serious problem in many Nigerian agricultural areas.
What makes weeds particularly troublesome is that they reproduce quickly through seeds or vegetative parts. Some weeds also produce toxic substances that harm crop growth. Understanding what qualifies as a weed helps farmers plan better control strategies.
