Types of Soil

Soils come in three main types based on their particle sizes: sandy, clay, and loamy soils. Sandy soils have large particles that don't hold water well, making them ideal for crops like cashew nuts grown in northern Nigeria. Clay soils have tiny particles that stick together, holding water and nutrients but becoming waterlogged easily. Loamy soils are the best type because they contain a balanced mixture of sand, clay, and silt particles. This balance allows loamy soils to retain moisture and nutrients while still having good drainage. Most fertile agricultural areas in Nigeria, like parts of the Middle Belt, contain loamy soils that support excellent crop production.

Understanding these soil types helps farmers choose appropriate crops and manage their farms better. Different regions naturally have different soil types, which influences what grows best there.

Chemical and Biological Composition of Soil

Soil contains both chemical and biological materials that make it fertile and alive. The chemical composition includes mineral elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These nutrients dissolve in soil water and get absorbed by plant roots. Organic matter, which comes from dead plants and animals, breaks down to release these chemicals into the soil.

The biological composition refers to living organisms in soil such as bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and insects. These organisms are extremely important because they decompose dead material and release nutrients that plants need to grow. For instance, in the rich volcanic soils around Mount Cameroon in Nigeria, the high biological activity makes these soils very productive for farming.

Both chemical and biological factors work together to create healthy, fertile soil that supports plant growth.

Soil Macro and Micro Nutrients

Nutrients in soil are simply plant foods divided into two groups based on how much plants need. Macronutrients are the big six: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. Plants consume these in large quantities for growth and reproduction. Nitrogen helps leaves grow green and strong, phosphorus builds roots and seeds, while potassium strengthens the plant overall.

Micronutrients include iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum. Although plants need only tiny amounts, these nutrients are absolutely critical for plant health. Without them, crops develop deficiency diseases and fail to thrive.

In Nigerian soils, particularly in the southern regions, laterite soils often lack sufficient phosphorus and potassium, which is why farmers apply fertilizers like NPK to boost crop yields. Without these additions, cassava and maize harvests suffer significantly.
