Rangeland refers to large areas of natural or semi-natural vegetation suitable for grazing livestock. Pasture is cultivated land specifically grown with grasses and legumes for animal feed. Both are crucial to livestock farming because they provide cheap, nutritious feed that reduces production costs significantly. In Nigeria, the Sahel savanna region stretches across states like Sokoto and Borno, serving as extensive rangelands where cattle, sheep, and goats graze freely.
Key characteristics of rangelands include open grassland vegetation, low rainfall, seasonal water availability, and varied soil types. These areas support diverse plant and animal species, though they're vulnerable to overgrazing and desertification. Unlike improved pastures requiring regular maintenance, rangelands are extensively managed with minimal human input, making them economical for pastoral communities.
Rangelands are natural grasslands where animals graze freely. The plants growing there fall into two main types: grasses and legumes. Grasses like guinea grass, elephant grass, and Rhodes grass are the main feed for cattle and sheep. They're tough plants that grow well in dry conditions. Legumes, such as stylosanthes and desmodium, are different because they have nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots that make soil more fertile. These plants are very nutritious for livestock, containing more protein than grasses alone.
In Nigeria, Stylosanthes species thrive across the northern savanna regions where they improve both animal diet quality and soil health simultaneously. Farmers often plant these legumes alongside grasses to create balanced pasture. When livestock graze on mixed rangeland with both grasses and legumes, they get better nutrition, which means faster growth and healthier animals.
The amount of grass and legumes that grow on pasture land depends on several important factors working together. Rainfall is crucial—areas receiving 500-1000mm annually produce better herbage than drier regions. In northern Nigeria, the Sahel zone experiences lower rainfall, resulting in less pasture production compared to the guinea savanna zone further south.
The mix of grass and legume species also matters significantly. Legumes like clover fix nitrogen in soil, improving overall pasture quality and productivity. Grazing management affects production too; overgrazing destroys young plants and prevents regeneration, while proper stocking rates allow pastures to recover and produce more herbage throughout the year.
Soil fertility, temperature, and season length further influence how much vegetation develops. During rainy seasons, herbage production peaks, but dry seasons create severe shortages, forcing farmers to use stored fodder.
Rangeland improvement means making grassland more productive for livestock. Controlled stocking involves limiting the number of animals grazing to prevent overgrazing and soil degradation. Rotational grazing moves animals between different pasture sections, allowing grass to recover. Adding fertilizers boosts soil nutrients and grass growth. Introducing legumes like cowpea enriches nitrogen naturally. Reseeding replaces poor-quality grass with better varieties. Weed control removes unwanted plants competing with pasture. Burning removes dead grass and stimulates new growth, commonly practiced in Northern Nigeria's savanna regions. Pest and disease control protects both pasture and livestock health.
For example, many Nigerian farmers now use rotational grazing on their ranches in Kachia, Kaduna State, rotating cattle between paddocks monthly to maintain healthy pasture and increase productivity.
