Pasture and forage crops are plants grown specifically to feed livestock like cattle, goats, and sheep. Think of them as the natural food that keeps your animals healthy and productive on the farm. Pasture refers to land where animals graze directly on living plants, while forage crops are plants you harvest and feed to animals, either fresh or dried as hay.
In Nigeria, guinea grass is a perfect example of a forage crop widely used by farmers. It grows well in our climate and provides excellent nutrition for cattle. Other common examples include legumes like cowpea and clover, which add nitrogen to the soil while feeding your animals at the same time.
These crops are crucial because they're cheaper than buying commercial animal feed, and they improve animal health and milk production. They also help maintain soil fertility on your farm.

Artificial pastures, on the other hand, are deliberately planted by farmers using improved grass and legume varieties. These provide better nutrition and can be managed for year-round feeding. Farmers plant species like guinea grass or legumes such as cowpea to supplement animal diet, especially during dry seasons. Artificial pastures are more productive and reliable than natural ones because farmers control the quality and availability of feed.

The Jos Plateau demonstrates this well, where cool temperatures and volcanic soil support excellent pasture production for cattle rearing. Water availability directly influences how much forage animals can feed on throughout the year. Sunlight exposure, altitude, and land management practices like proper grazing rotation also determine whether pastures remain productive or become degraded. Farmers who understand these factors can select appropriate pasture species for their regions and maintain healthy feeding grounds for livestock.
Establishing a pasture means preparing land and planting it with good grass and legume crops that cattle, goats and sheep will eat. Before planting, you must clear the land thoroughly, remove weeds and rocks, then plough it well so the soil becomes loose and fertile. This preparation helps plant roots grow deep and strong.

In Nigeria, many farmers successfully use rotational grazing on guinea grass pastures, moving cattle between paddocks monthly to maintain productivity.
