WAEC SSCE Agricultural Science
Study notes for Meaning and importance of agriculture — part of the WAEC SSCE Agricultural Science syllabus. 2 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Agriculture is the practice of growing crops and raising animals for food, fiber, and other useful products. Think of it as the business of farming – when your uncle in Kaduna grows groundnuts or your cousin raises chickens in Lagos, they're practicing agriculture.
Agricultural science divides into two main branches. Crop production focuses on cultivating plants like maize, cassava, and tomatoes that feed Nigeria. Animal husbandry deals with raising livestock such as cattle, goats, and poultry for meat, milk, and eggs.
Both branches work together to make Nigeria's farming system strong. A farmer might grow maize to feed animals while selling excess crops for income. Understanding these branches helps you see how agriculture touches every Nigerian's life, from your dinner table to the clothes you wear.
Agriculture is the practice of farming crops and raising animals for food and other products. Understanding its importance helps you answer WAEC questions effectively.
For individuals, agriculture provides income through selling farm produce like cassava, maize, and cocoa. It also ensures food security—families grow what they eat, staying healthy and strong. At the community level, agriculture creates employment for many people and strengthens social bonds through farming cooperatives. These groups help farmers share knowledge and resources, just like the cassava farming associations in Ogun State that support smallholder farmers.
Nationally, agriculture is Nigeria's economic backbone, generating foreign exchange through exports and reducing the need for food imports. It also provides raw materials for industries like textile and food processing, creating more jobs and boosting development.
