Irrigation and Drainage Study Notes

Irrigation means supplying water to farmland through artificial means when rainfall is insufficient. Drainage is the opposite—it removes excess water from waterlogged soil so crops can grow properly. Both are crucial for stable food production.

Think of it this way: crops need the right amount of water, not too little and not too much. In the dry season or dry regions like parts of Northern Nigeria, farmers use irrigation methods such as canal systems, sprinklers, or wells to water their crops. In areas with excessive rainfall or poor natural drainage, like some regions during the rainy season, farmers dig channels and construct drains to remove standing water that would rot plant roots and cause diseases.

A practical Nigerian example is the Kainji irrigation scheme in Niger State, where water from the dam is channeled to farmland, allowing farmers to grow crops year-round instead of only during rainy season.
