Farm power refers to the energy or force needed to perform agricultural activities like ploughing, harvesting, and transporting crops. Without farm power, farming would be extremely difficult and time-consuming. Nigeria uses several sources of farm power depending on available resources and farm size.
The main sources include human power, where farmers and labourers use their own strength for tasks like weeding and harvesting. Animal power uses cattle, horses, and donkeys to pull ploughs and carts, which is common in northern Nigeria where farmers traditionally use oxen for land preparation. Mechanical power comes from tractors and engines that do heavy work quickly and efficiently. Solar and electrical power are becoming popular for pumping water and grinding grain in modern Nigerian farms.
Each source has advantages and disadvantages based on cost, availability, and the type of farming being done. Small-scale farmers often combine human and animal power, while large commercial farms rely on tractors.

Electric power suits small farms near urban areas but depends on grid reliability, which remains unreliable in rural Nigeria.
