Environmental factors are the natural conditions in an area that determine which crops grow best and which animals thrive there. These include climate, soil type, water availability, and temperature. For example, Nigeria's northern savanna region is ideal for cattle rearing because the grasslands provide good pasture, while the southern rainforest supports cocoa and rubber production due to high rainfall and humid conditions.
When environmental conditions suit a crop or animal, production increases significantly. However, poor conditions reduce yields. A farmer in Kaduna cannot successfully grow cocoa because the climate is too dry, just as tropical fish cannot survive in cold water. Understanding these factors helps farmers choose appropriate crops and livestock for their location, leading to better harvests and healthier animals.
Climatic factors are weather conditions that directly influence how well crops grow in any location. The main ones you must know are rainfall, temperature, light, wind, and relative humidity. Rainfall provides water that plants need for growth and survival. Temperature affects how fast crops develop and which types can grow in different regions. Light energy from the sun powers photosynthesis, the process plants use to make food. Wind helps pollinate flowers and strengthens plant stems, though too much wind causes damage. Relative humidity, which is moisture in the air, affects how much water plants lose through their leaves.
Consider cocoa farming in Nigeria's southwestern regions. Cocoa thrives where rainfall is abundant, temperatures stay warm year-round, and humidity remains high. These perfect conditions make areas like Ondo and Ekiti ideal for cocoa production.
