Drainage means the removal of excess water from farmland so crops can grow properly. When soil has too much water, plant roots rot, nutrients wash away, and crops die. Think of it like this: if you pour water endlessly on a plant, it drowns. Farmers use drainage systems to control water levels in their fields.
In Nigeria, many farmers in the Niger Delta and other wetland areas dig channels and ditches to drain swampy farmland. This allows them to plant crops like rice, maize, and vegetables in areas that would otherwise be waterlogged. Good drainage improves soil aeration, makes nutrients available to plants, and prevents diseases caused by excessive moisture.
There are different drainage methods—surface drainage using ditches, subsurface drainage using pipes, and ridge-making for sloped fields. Proper drainage is essential for successful farming in Nigeria's tropical climate where rainfall is heavy.

The water flows downhill naturally into these constructed pathways, draining into streams or collection areas away from your productive land. This keeps soil conditions right for crop growth.
Subsurface drainage, also called underground drainage, is the removal of excess water that sits below the soil surface. When water accumulates underground, it prevents plant roots from getting oxygen and causes waterlogging, which kills crops. This system uses underground pipes, tiles, or gravel channels buried below the topsoil to collect and carry away this excess water to a suitable outlet like a stream or drainage ditch.
Think of it like this: the underground pipes act as hidden gutters that quietly remove water the soil cannot hold. In Nigeria, many rice farmers in areas like Kebbi and Bauchi states use underground drainage systems to manage water in their paddies, preventing salt accumulation and improving soil health. The water moves through these pipes by gravity, flowing downward and away from the farming area.
