A crop disease is any harmful condition that damages plants and reduces their ability to grow properly and produce good yields. When a plant gets a disease, its normal functions are disrupted, and it cannot perform well. Diseases are caused by living organisms like fungi, bacteria, viruses, or nematodes, as well as non-living factors such as poor soil conditions or nutrient deficiency.
Think of cassava mosaic disease, which is very common in Nigeria. This viral disease makes cassava leaves develop yellow and green patterns, weakening the entire plant so it produces fewer tubers and poor quality roots. The infected plant cannot carry out photosynthesis effectively because its leaves are damaged.
Understanding diseases is crucial because they cause serious crop losses every year. Farmers who identify diseases early can take action to prevent spread and save their harvest. This knowledge helps you understand why farmers use certain prevention methods like crop rotation and using certified seeds.
