Common weeds

Weeds are unwanted plants that grow where farmers don't plant them, and they seriously affect animal production in Nigeria. When livestock like cattle, goats, and sheep graze on pastures filled with weeds, the animals can't get enough nutritious grass to eat. Some weeds are even poisonous to animals. For example, Chromolaena odorata, commonly called Siam weed and found throughout southern Nigeria, can poison goats and cattle when they accidentally eat it while grazing. Weeds also compete with good pasture grasses for water, nutrients, and sunlight, reducing the quality and quantity of animal feed available. This means your livestock gains weight slowly and produces less milk or meat. Farmers must control weeds through regular weeding, proper grazing management, and sometimes using herbicides to maintain healthy pastures for their animals.
