Reproduction is the biological process through which animals produce offspring to continue their species. It involves the creation of new individual organisms from one or two parent animals. This process is fundamental to all living things and ensures that species do not become extinct.
There are two main types of reproduction. Sexual reproduction involves two parents contributing genetic material, while asexual reproduction requires only one parent. In Nigeria, cattle breeding is an excellent example of sexual reproduction, where a bull and cow mate to produce calves. The offspring inherit characteristics from both parents, which is why farmers carefully select breeding animals to improve herd quality.
Without reproduction, animal populations would disappear completely. Understanding this concept helps you grasp how farms maintain their livestock and how wild animal populations sustain themselves in nature.
Hormones are special chemicals produced in the body that control reproduction in farm animals. They work like messengers, telling different body parts when to get ready for breeding. The main hormone is called FSH, which helps develop eggs in female animals and sperm in males. Another important one is LH, which triggers ovulation—when a female releases an egg ready for fertilization. In males, testosterone builds muscle and makes them aggressive during mating season.
Think of a Nigerian farmer raising cattle. When a cow's body produces enough estrogen and progesterone hormones, she enters heat and shows signs she's ready to breed. The farmer recognizes these signs and brings his bull for mating. Without these hormones working properly, the cow won't conceive and the farmer loses money.
Understanding how these chemicals work helps farmers manage their animals better and improve their herds.
The reproductive system is how farm animals make babies. Male animals have organs that produce sperm, while females have organs that produce eggs. When a male and female animal mate, the sperm fertilizes the egg, and pregnancy begins.
In Nigeria, when a farmer wants piglets from his sow, he must understand how the sow's reproductive cycle works. The sow goes into heat at certain times, signaling she's ready to mate. If the farmer recognizes these signs—like swelling of the vulva and restlessness—he can introduce the boar at the right time for successful breeding.

Egg formation in poultry, particularly in hens, is a remarkable biological process that begins in the ovary. When a hen reaches maturity, the ovary produces a yolk cell that grows larger over time. This yolk moves into the oviduct where different layers are added to it. First, the albumen (egg white) is secreted around the yolk, providing protection and nutrients. Then the shell membranes wrap around everything, followed by the hard calcium shell that we see in the eggs we eat daily.
The entire process takes approximately 24 to 26 hours from start to finish. Think of how Nigerian poultry farmers collect fresh eggs from their hens each morning—this is the result of this continuous egg formation cycle. A healthy hen can lay an egg almost every day when conditions are favourable, including proper nutrition, lighting, and stress-free environment.
