WAEC SSCE Agricultural Science
Study notes for Animal feeds and feed stuffs and their — part of the WAEC SSCE Agricultural Science syllabus. 1 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Animal feeds are foods we give to livestock like chickens, goats, and cattle to help them grow strong and healthy. Feedstuffs are the raw materials used to make these feeds. Nigeria is blessed with many local sources of quality feedstuffs that farmers can use instead of expensive imported ones.
Common Nigerian feedstuffs include cassava peels, maize bran, palm kernel cake, and groundnut haulms. For example, a poultry farmer in Kaduna can use cassava peels mixed with maize bran to feed their chickens cheaply and effectively. Kitchen waste, grass clippings, and agricultural residues are also excellent local feed sources. Using local feedstuffs reduces farming costs, supports the local economy, and makes Nigerian agriculture more sustainable.
