Systems of Governance Study Note

Different countries organize their governments in different ways. The main systems are monarchy, where a king or queen rules; democracy, where power belongs to the people through voting; dictatorship, where one person has total control; and oligarchy, where a small group holds power. Nigeria operates under a presidential democratic system, meaning we have a president as head of state and government, a national assembly that makes laws, and regular elections where citizens vote. This differs from parliamentary systems like Britain's, where the prime minister is the chief executive. Understanding these systems matters because each one affects how laws are made, who has real power, and how citizens participate in governance. The structure determines whether leaders can be easily removed, how much freedom people enjoy, and whether government serves the many or the few.

💡 Exam tip: When answering questions about systems of governance, clearly distinguish between the structure (who holds power) and how it actually functions in practice—don't assume all democracies work identically.
