Maps: Types and Uses

A map is a simplified representation of Earth's surface or part of it drawn on a flat surface. Maps exist in different types, each serving specific purposes. Physical maps show natural features like mountains, rivers, and vegetation—for example, a map displaying Nigeria's Jos Plateau and Niger Delta. Political maps display boundaries of countries, states, and cities, helping you understand administrative divisions like Nigeria's 36 states. Thematic maps focus on specific information such as climate zones, population distribution, or economic activities across regions.

The uses of maps are countless. Geographers use them for research and analysis, travelers depend on them for navigation, and governments rely on them for planning infrastructure and resource management. Businessmen use maps to identify market locations, while military personnel use tactical maps for strategic planning.

💡 Exam tip: When answering map questions, always identify the map type first before explaining its purpose, as examiners often test whether you can distinguish between different map categories.
