Microbiology is a fascinating science programme that equips students with in-depth knowledge of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and their interactions with humans, animals, and the environment. Students explore core areas such as immunology, virology, mycology, industrial microbiology, and public health microbiology through both theoretical and practical laboratory training. Graduates are well-positioned to pursue rewarding careers as medical laboratory scientists, public health officers, food safety inspectors, and research scientists across government agencies, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies. The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) regulates professional practice for those entering diagnostic and clinical settings, making professional certification an important step after graduation. The programme remains highly relevant given Nigeria's ongoing battles with infectious diseases and growing biotechnology sector.
