Admission requirements for Education & Yoruba at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Ogun State.
(i) Five (5) credit passes at the Senior Secondary Level GCE O/L, NECO/WASCE at not more than two sittings. The credit should include Yoruba, Mathematics, English Language and any three of History, French, English Literature, Christian Religious Knowledge, Islamic Studies, and Civic Education. Five merit/credit passes at the Grade II Teachers’ Examination including Yoruba, Mathematics, English Language and any three of History, French, English Literature, Christian Religious Knowledge, Islamic Studies, and Civic Education.
Education & Yoruba is a dual-discipline programme that equips students with professional teaching competencies alongside deep scholarly knowledge of the Yoruba language, literature, oral traditions, and cultural heritage. Students explore linguistics, Yoruba phonology, morphology, prose, poetry, and drama, while also receiving grounding in educational psychology, curriculum development, and pedagogy. Graduates are well-positioned to pursue careers as secondary school Yoruba language teachers, curriculum developers, educational content creators, and cultural affairs officers in government ministries. Those in the classroom profession are expected to register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which regulates teaching practice nationwide. The programme is particularly valuable for graduates passionate about preserving indigenous language education and strengthening Yoruba cultural identity across Nigerian communities.
