About Optometry

Optometry is a five-year professional degree programme that equips students with the knowledge and clinical skills required to examine, diagnose, and manage disorders of the eye and visual system. Students study subjects including ocular anatomy, physiological optics, contact lens practice, low vision rehabilitation, binocular vision, and pharmacology, alongside supervised clinical rotations that build practical competence. Graduates are well-positioned to work as independent optometrists in private practice, pursue careers in hospital eye care units, join the ophthalmic industry as lens consultants, or take up public health roles focused on community eye care programmes. The Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) regulates practice in the country, and licensure through this body is mandatory before any graduate may legally practice.
