About Dentistry

Dentistry is a five-year undergraduate programme that equips students with comprehensive knowledge and clinical skills in oral healthcare. Students study core biomedical sciences, dental anatomy, oral pathology, periodontology, orthodontics, oral surgery, and restorative dentistry, gaining hands-on clinical experience in teaching hospitals throughout their training. Upon graduation, students complete a one-year internship before full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the statutory body regulating dental practice in the country. Career pathways include working as a general dental practitioner in public or private hospitals, specialising in areas such as orthodontics or oral surgery, pursuing academic and research roles in tertiary institutions, or joining the Nigerian military and paramilitary medical services as a commissioned dental officer.
