About Dental Therapy

Dental Therapy is a clinical health sciences programme that trains students in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common oral diseases and dental conditions. Students gain both theoretical and practical knowledge in areas such as oral anatomy, dental materials, periodontology, paediatric dentistry, oral health education, and conservative dentistry. Graduates are equipped to provide primary oral healthcare services under appropriate supervision. Upon completion, students are required to register with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) before practising professionally. Career opportunities in Nigeria are diverse and include working as dental therapists in public and private hospitals, serving in community health outreach programmes, joining the Nigerian military or paramilitary health services, or pursuing academic and research roles in teaching hospitals and health institutions.
